10 years ago on June 19 New Hampshire took a giant step forward in defining exploitation of elder, disabled and impaired adults as a specific crime. HB 1555 was signed into law providing a clearer path to justice for victims of financial exploitation.
“The purpose of this act is to provide clear guidance relative to actions that constitute the crime of financial exploitation of elder, disabled, or impaired adults and to encourage the cooperation of law enforcement officials, courts of competent jurisdiction and all appropriate state agencies providing human services in identifying these crimes.”
Governor Hassan’s Statement (June 19, 2014) on signing HB 1555:
“Fully including all Granite Staters in our communities means standing up for the most vulnerable
among us. This common-sense, bipartisan legislation takes an important step toward confronting
abuse of vulnerable victims by strengthening protection against financial exploitation for elderly,
disabled and impaired adults. I thank Representative Rogers for her leadership on this issue, as
well as legislators from both parties and victims’ advocates for their commitment to protecting our
citizens, and I am happy to sign HB 1555 into law.”
